Biography

Simon Roberts (*1974, London, UK) is a British photographic artist whose work deals with the socio-cultural meaning of landscape and notions of identity and belonging. Often employing expansive tableaux photographs, his approach is one of creating wide-ranging surveys of our time, which examine contemporary economic, cultural and political landscapes. His photographs are taken with great technical precision, from elevated positions. The distanced vantage point allows the relationship of individual bodies and groups to the landscape to be clearly observed, and echoes the visual language of history painting.

His work has been exhibited widely and his photographs reside in major public and private collections, including the George Eastman Museum, the Art Collection Deutsche Börse, and the V&A Collection. He was recently made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society; and in 2010 was, in the capacity of official Election Artist, commissioned by the House of Commons Works of Art Committee to produce a record of the 2010 UK General Election.

Outside of his own professional practice, Roberts is an active public speaker and holds a position as a visiting lecturer on the European Master of Fine Art Photography course at IED Madrid. He lives and works in Brighton.

Seine oft großformatigen Farbfotografien sind meist Teil von umfangreichen Untersuchungen zu wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und politischen Aspekten von Landschaft. Seine Fotografien werden mit großer technischer Präzision von erhöhtem Standpunkt aus aufgenommen, der es erlauben, die Beziehung der einzelnen Körper und Gruppen zur Landschaft klar zu beobachten und der die visuelle Sprache der Historienmalerei zitiert.

Seine Arbeiten wurden intensiv international ausgestellt und finden sich in wichtigen öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen, darunter der des George Eastman Museum, der Art Collection Deutsche Börse und der Victoria & Albert Collection. Er wurde kürzlich zum Ehrenmitglied der Royal Photographic Society ernannt. 2010 war er als offizieller Wahlkünstler vom Commons Work of Art Committee beauftragt worden, einen Bericht über die allgemeinen Wahlen des Vereinigten Königreichs 2010 zu erstellen.

Simon Roberts ist Gastdozent der European Master of Fine Art Photography Klasse am IED Madrid. Er lebt und arbeitet in Brighton.
