Hans-Christian Schink | Aqua Claudia

During his residency at Villa Massimo Hans-Christian Schink explores the urban history of Rome along the Aqua Claudia. The Aqua Claudia was an antique aqueduct, supplying the roman capital with water. The overall length from the source to the city-centre added up to approximately 69 kilometres. For the bigger part of the stretch, the canal took its course underground, for the last 13 kilometres the water was conducted into the city via over ground arch constructions. In 38 AD building of the Aqua Claudia began under the rule of emperor Caligula and was finished under emperor Claudius in 52 AD. From today’s Parco degli Aquedotti to Porta Maggiore the remaining fragments can still be found throughout the south-eastern districts. Hans-Christian Schink follows the aqueduct through the urban landscape, depicting a cross section of the city’s history.

Hans-Christian Schink, born in 1961 in Erfurt, lives and works in Berlin. His work is internationally exhibited and published and is found in important collections both private and public. In 2013 he received the German LEAD Award in Gold.

Als Stipendiat der Villa Massimo beschäftigt sich Hans Christian Schink mit der städtebaulichen Geschichte der Stadt Rom anhand der Aqua Claudia. Die Aqua Claudia war ein antikes Aquädukt zur Wasserversorgung der römischen Kapitale. Die Gesamtlänge von der Quelle bis ins Zentrum der Stadt betrug etwa 69 Kilometer. Über den größten Teil der Strecke verlief die Kanalführung unterirdisch, auf den letzten 13 Kilometern wurde das Wasser mit oberirdischen Bogenkonstruktionen in die Stadt geleitet. Die Aqua Claudia wurde im Jahr 38 n. Chr. unter Kaiser Caligula begonnen und 52 n. Chr. unter Kaiser Claudius vollendet. Vom heutigen Parco degli Aquedotti bis zur Porta Maggiore durchziehen die noch vorhandenen Fragmente die südöstlichen Stadtviertel. Als Stipendiat der Deutschen Akademie in Rom folgt Hans-Christian Schink dem Aquädukt durch die urbane Landschaft und zeigt einen Querschnitt durch die historische Entwicklung der Stadt.

Hans-Christian Schink, geboren 1961 in Erfurt, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Seine Arbeit wird international ausgestellt und veröffentlicht und findet sich in wichtigen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen. 2013 wurde er mit dem LEAD Award in Gold ausgezeichnet.
