Ute and Werner Mahler are being honored this spring by Hamburg’s Haus der Photographie that is showing a large retrospective exhibition titled “Werkschau”. Ute Mahler (born 1949) and Werner Mahler (born 1950) have been key figures of photography in the former GDR. After the German reunification they co-founded the prestigious Ostkreuz photography agency and the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin. In spring 2011 the Robert Morat Gallery showed the first joint project of the married couple titled “Monalisen der Vorstädte” and is thrilled to now accompany the large institutional show with a presentation of the second joint body of work “Die seltsamen Tage”. “Die seltsamen Tage”, a series of large landscape studies, is an expedition into well known territory. The couple travelled through Brandenburg, Thuringia and Lower Saxony, looking for bits and pieces, for moments with an ambiguous quality. “We were concerned with the discovery of the unexpected. We noticed that over the years we have encountered images that were strange, whose mystery could not be solved.” “Very simply put,” say Ute and Werner Mahler, “they are the kind of situations that you want to tell your parter about when you get home at night!”

UTE & WERNER MAHLER are living and working in Hamburg and Berlin. Ute Mahler is Professor of Photography at the HAW Hamburg, Werner Mahler manages the Ostkreuz Agency and teaches at the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin. to accompany the “Werkschau” at the House of Photography, a new book has been published by Kehrer Verlag.
