Marco Maria Zanin | Betweend Fields and Spirits

Robert Morat Galerie is happy to host the first exhibition by Italian visual artist and researcher Marco Maria Zanin in Germany. The exhibition project ‘Between Fields and Spirits’ has been specifically conceived for the gallery’s Berlin space, unfolding in three chapters that follow the flow of the three rooms.

In the words of the artist, ‘Between Fields and Spirits’ is ‘an exhibition project moving between artistic practice, anthropology, and relational philosophy. Through ceramics, photography, installations, and visual ethnography, the show explores earth as a symbolic, affective, and spiritual force – a space of memory, gesture, and transformation.’

The third room is dedicated to a new body of work titled ‘Auto-poiesi barbaricina’, a series of ethnographic-artistic devices presenting the work of the Sardinian outsider artist Gesuino Coinu and the results of an ongoing dialogue between him and Zanin. The installation combines Coinu’s works, photographic fragments, contextual traces, and textual elements drawn from their dialogue, forming a layered narrative.

Marco Maria Zanin (*1983, Padua, Italy) is an artist and academic researcher whose practice lies at the crossroads of photography, contemporary art, anthropology, and social engagement. His career includes solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia, Fondazione Modena Arti Visive, Casa dei Tre Oci (Venice), Pivô – Arte e Pesquisa (São Paulo), as well as collaborations with international platforms including Fondazione Cologni and the National Museum of Ethnology in Lisbon. He is the founder of Humus Interdisciplinary, a platform dedicated to artistic research in rural territories. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Anthropology at ISCTE/NOVA University in Lisbon, focusing on material culture and the ethnographic museum as a relational and intercultural laboratory.

Marco Maria Zanin lives and works between Padua and São Paulo, Brazil.

Die Robert Morat Galerie freut sich sehr, die erste Ausstellung des italienischen Künstlers und Forschers Marco Maria Zanin in Deutschland präsentieren zu dürfen. Das Ausstellungsprojekt „Between Fields and Spirits“ wurde eigens für die Ausstellungsräume der Galerie in Berlin konzipiert und entfaltet sich in drei Kapiteln, die der Abfolge der drei Räume folgen.

In den Worten des Künstlers handelt es sich bei „Between Fields and Spirits“ um „ein Ausstellungsprojekt, das sich zwischen künstlerischer Praxis, Anthropologie und Beziehungsphilosophie bewegt. Durch Keramiken, Fotografien, Installationen und visuelle Ethnografie erforscht die Ausstellung die Erde als symbolische, affektive und spirituelle Kraft – ein Raum der Erinnerung, Geste und Transformation.“

Der dritte Raum ist einer neuen Serie mit dem Titel „Auto-poiesi barbaricina“ gewidmet, einer Reihe ethnografisch-künstlerischer Installationen, die das Werk des sardischen Outsider-Künstlers Gesuino Coinu sowie die Ergebnisse eines fortlaufenden Dialogs zwischen ihm und Zanin präsentieren. Die gezeigte Installation kombiniert Coinus’ Werke, fotografische Fragmente, kontextuelle Spuren und Textelemente aus dem Dialog zwischen beiden und bildet so eine vielschichtige Erzählung.

Marco Maria Zanin (*1983, Padua, Italien) ist ein Künstler und akademischer Forscher, dessen Praxis sich an der Schnittstelle von Fotografie, zeitgenössischer Kunst, Anthropologie und gesellschaftlichem Engagement entfaltet. Seine Karriere umfasst Einzelausstellungen in Institutionen wie dem Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia, der Fondazione Modena Arti Visive, der Casa dei Tre Oci (Venedig), Pivô – Arte e Pesquisa (São Paulo) sowie die Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Plattformen wie der Fondazione Cologni und dem National Museum of Ethnology in Lissabon. Er ist der Gründer von Humus Interdisciplinary, einer Plattform, die sich der künstlerischen Forschung in ländlichen Gebieten widmet. Derzeit promoviert er in Anthropologie an der Universität ISCTE/NOVA in Lissabon und beschäftigt sich mit materieller Kultur und dem ethnografischen Museum als relationalem und interkulturellem Labor.
