Jessica Backhaus is regarded as one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary photography in Germany today. Her work is exhibited and published internationally and found in important collections, both public and private, such as the Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Margulies Collection in Miami or the Deutschen Börse Collection in Frankfurt. Born in 1970 and raised in Berlin, she studied photography and visual communication in Paris. She refers to Gisèle Freund as one of her most important teachers and mentors during that time. From 1995 to 2010, Backhaus lived in New York; last year she has moved back to her home town and is now living and working in Berlin.

In 2005, Kehrer Books, Heidelberg, published her first book “Jesus and the Cherries”, which also marks her first international success as an exhibiting artist. In 2008 two new publications were put out: “What still remains” and “One Day in November”. And in 2010, Jessica Backhaus presented her latest publication “I wanted to see the World”, also published by Kehrer Books. The exhibition titled WERKSCHAU at the SCHAURAUM BERLIN will feature works from all four previously published series and will attempt a survey of Jessica Backhaus’ work during the last 10 years.

Jessica Backhaus gilt heute als eine der wichtigsten Vertreterinnen zeitgenössischer Fotografie aus Deutschland. Ihre Arbeit wird international ausgestellt und publiziert und findet sich in wichtigen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen wie dem Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, der Margulies Collection in Miami oder der Sammlung der Deutschen Börse in Frankfurt. Jessica Backhaus, 1970 geboren und in Berlin aufgewachsen, studierte Fotografie und Visuelle Kommunikation in Paris. Sie nennt Gisèle Freund als ihre wichtigste Lehrerin und Mentorin in dieser Zeit. Nach ihrem Studium, zwischen 1995 und 2010 lebte sie in New York; seit dem vergangenen Jahr lebt und arbeitet Jessica Backhaus wieder in ihrer Heimatstadt Berlin.

Im Jahr 2005 veröffentlicht der Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, Jessica Backhaus’ erstes Buchprojekt „Jesus and the Cherries“, das auch ihre ersten internationalen Ausstellungserfolge als Fotokünstlerin markiert. im Jahr 2008 folgen zwei weitere Publikationen: „What still remains“ und „One Day in November“. 2010 legt Jessica Backhaus ihr viertes Buch „I wanted to see the World“ vor, ebenfalls erschienen im Kehrer Verlag. Die Ausstellung WERKSCHAU im SCHAURAUM BERLIN zeigt Arbeiten aus allen vier bisher veröffentlichten Serien und unternimmt den Versuch eines Querschnitts aus Jessica Backhaus’ Arbeit der vergangenen zehn Jahre.
