Biography
Joakim Eskildsen (*1971, Copenhagen, Denmark), trained with Royal Court photographer Mrs. Rigmor Mydtskov (1988-92) in Denmark before studying in Finland at the prestigious University of Art and Design, the so-called Helsinki School. Here he mentions Jyrki Parantainen and Pentti Sammallahti as the most important teachers and mentors. After first book publications Nordic Signs (1995), Bluetide (1997), iChickenMoon (1999) Eskildsen published “The Roma Journey” in cooperation with writer Cia Rinne with Steidl in 2007. The book became one of the most successful photo book publications of its time and put Eskildsen on the map internationally. Other publications American Realities (2016) and Cornwall (2018) and international exhibition projects followed. More recently, he has undertaken journeys through Cuba to investigate the changes the country is facing these years. A monograph is in the planning with Steidl who will also publish “Home Works”. Eskildsen’s photography has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, TIME Magazine, National Geographic, and The Smithsonian. He lives and works in the countryside, outside of Berlin.
Joakim Eskildsen (*1971, Kopenhagen, Dänemark), macht eine Photographen-Lehre in Dänemark bevor er 1994 in Finnland an der sehr renommierten Universität für Kunst und Design, der so genannten „Helsinki School“ studiert. Als wichtigste Lehrer und Mentoren nennt er dort Jyrki Parantainen und Pentti Sammallahti. Nach ersten Buchpublikationen Nordic Signs (1995), Bluetide (1997), iChickenMoon (1999) erschien im Jahr 2007 bei Steidl in Zusammenarbeit mit der Autorin Cia Rinne der Titel „Die Roma-Reisen“. Das Buch wurde eines der erfolgreichsten Fotobuch-Publikationen seiner Zeit und machte Eskildsen international bekannt. Es folgten weitere Publikationen American Realities (2016) und Cornwall (2018) und internationale Ausstellunsghprojekte. Während der letzten Jahre hat er Reisen durch Kuba unternommen um die Veränderungen zu untersuchen, denen sich das Land aktuell gegenübersieht. Eine Monographie mit Steidl, wo auch „Home Works“ veröffentlicht wird, ist in Planung. Eskildsens Fotografie wurde in zahlreichen Publikationen veröffentlicht, darunter das New York Times Magazine, im TIME Magazine, in der National Geographic und im The Smithsonian. Er lebt und arbeitet auf dem Land, außerhalb von Berlin.
